In 2008, while many churches were doing away with their sanctuary choirs, the CPC music department
sought a way to pass along the choral tradition to a new generation of singers, while at the same time
helping students with the heavy burden of college expenses.
Hence, the Choral Scholar Scholarship Program was born.
It’s a win-win for all of us! Since 2008, the Choral Scholar Fund has given away over $60,000
in scholarship funds to high school and college age students in
the Choral Scholar Scholarship Program – students who have sung with the Centerian Choir
during the school year. Many of the Choral Scholars sing with the Centerian Choir for several years,
thereby creating rich relational bonds across age groups within the Choir.
The multi-generational aspect of the Centerian Choir
is now a beautiful sight to see and hear on Sunday mornings and at concert events.
Choral Scholars from previous years have been accepted to music departments in
colleges and universities such as UCLA, University of the Pacific,
San Jose State University, Seattle Pacific University,
The San Francisco Conservatory of Music, Emory College and St. Olaf College.
Choral Arts at CPC
For over 50 years, Centerville Presbyterian Church has consistently supported a rich choral music tradition.
Through these years, Sunday by Sunday, the Centerian Sanctuary Choir has been leading and enhancing the
traditional worship experience with dynamic choral anthems, spirituals, classic hymn arrangements
and sacred classical music. The development of the “Centerville Christmas Tradition Concerts”
into a four-night event, the purchase of an Allen Renaissance Organ, semi-annual concerts of
classics with combined choirs and orchestras, choir trips to Carnegie Hall and
Lincoln Center in New York City, and the development of the CenterPeace Orchestra and
Centerville Community Chorale have all brought the choral arts
to deeper levels of appreciation and participation at CPC.
