Fix Your Eyes on Jesus

By Pastor Jim Schoon

KEY PASSAGE: Hebrews 12:2-3

“Let us fix our eyes on Jesus, the author and perfecter of our faith, who for the joy that was set before him endured the cross, scorning its shame, and sat down at the right hand of the throne of God. Consider him who endured such opposition from sinful men, so that you will not grow weary and lose heart.”

One of the best pieces of advice I have received over the past several weeks of shelter-in-place is an encouragement to focus on that which is excellent.

This week begins week #6 in our Shelter-in-Place, and during these challenging times it is easy to forget who we are and to whom we belong.  It is easy to lose focus and burrow ourselves into a dark and foreboding mindset. We look around and see suffering; we listen, and we hear pain; we feel sad, and almost helpless.  So I offer to you the advice of focusing on that which is excellent, and refer you to Hebrews 12:2-3, which tells us, “Fix your eyes on Jesus…so you will not lose heart.”

As we “fix our eyes on Jesus”, we see:

  • The Son of God who gave up His place in heaven to come to earth, because He loved us.
  • We see a person who experienced pain and suffering, but persevered because he had a purpose
  • We see a person who was resurrected from the dead and gives us hope for today and life for tomorrow because He is with us each step of our way.
  • We see a Resurrected Lord who is preparing a place for us in His eternal home.

Yes, the Easter story is one that has changed the world, and changes lives today because it is one we celebrate every day.  Yes!  God is with us in every event of our lives. The Lord has risen and we must “fix our eyes on Jesus…so we do not lose heart.”

Prayer:  Almighty and Everlasting God, the resurrection event continues to reverberate through the world.  Thank you for the gift of Your Son.  May we turn our focus to Jesus, and Your resurrection power… so we do not lose heart.  In Jesus name we pray.  Amen.
