The Greatness of God (Part 3)

By: Pastor Jim Schoon

Key Passage- Isaiah 40:29-31

“The Lord gives strength to the weary

and increases the power of the weak.

Even youths grow tired and weary and

young men stumble and fall; but those

who hope in the Lord will renew their

strength. They will soar on wings like

eagles; they will run and not grow

weary; they will walk and not be faint.”

Today I will finish my 3-part devotional series on the theme of “The Greatness of

God.” In my previous two devotions I have framed this thought on the greatness

of God in creation (Psalm 19:1-2), and in the mercies of God being new every

morning (Lamentations 3:22-24).

Today I will speak of the greatness of God in the context of Isaiah 40:29-31, where

the prophet offers the encouraging thought that God provides strength for the weak

and weary, both the young and the old.

Because of their disobedience to God, the people of Israel had been conquered by

an enemy nation and exiled from their homeland. They had been in exile for years

but had always longed to return to their own country. The return had not

happened, and they were becoming tired and weary in their land of exile. Then the

prophet spoke these words of hope, indicating that God was going to deliver them

in His time. This hope would energize this beleaguered community of faith.

The prophet’s message speaks to us today. Many of us may find ourselves

“beleaguered” as we experience not only the normal issues of life, but the

extraordinary issues of life of the pandemic. The longer this current “new normal”

goes, the more likely it is that we will grow tired and weary in this condition of

The good news of Isaiah is that God will be faithful to His character and energize

His people. The key to God’s activity is in the words of the prophet when he says,

“…but those who hope in the Lord will renew their strength.” Hope energizes

people and gives them renewed “vim and vigor” for the days ahead. When people

have hope, they can deal with disconcerting issues in life, and face each day with

renewed strength.

It is my prayer that today will be a day of “hoping in the Lord,” and as you do, may

you feel the Lord’s renewing strength in your life. Experience the greatness of

God in this powerful way.

Prayer: Almighty God, Father in heaven, thank you for the promise of renewed

strength. There are times when I feel discouraged and faint-hearted. There are

times when I grow tired and weary. I thank you for the renewed strength you will

give me as I place my hope in You. As I live this day, I pray that your Holy Spirit

will fill me with hope in a powerful heavenly Father, and I will feel my strength

being renewed moment by moment…situation by situation. In Jesus’ name I pray.
