Walking Together

By: Pastor Jim Schoon

Key Passages: Joshua 1:5

"... I will never leave you nor forsake you.”

1 Corinthians 12:26

“If one part suffers, every part suffers with it; if one

part is honored, every part rejoices with it.”

Amy Grant, a singer known for her Christian music, has said, “Whatever you’re

going through in life, you tend to gravitate toward people who are going through

the same things. You can’t fix it, but you don’t have to go through it alone.” She

said this as she was being a caregiver for her parents who were dealing with

dementia.

“You don’t have to go through it (circumstance) alone” is a powerful biblical truth,

for the Bible states that God and others walk together with us.

In Joshua 1:5, God speaks to Joshua after Moses had handed over the leadership of

Israel to Joshua. He was on the verge of taking the people of God into the

Promised Land, and God said to him, “…I will never leave you nor forsake you.”

God was affirming his presence in the life of Joshua as he assumed a critical

position in the plan of God. While there would be times of doubt and uncertainty,

God would not abandon him. He would “walk together” with Joshua.

In I Corinthians 12:26, Paul is comparing the church to a physical person, and says,

“If one part suffers, every part suffers with it; if one part is honored, every part

rejoices with it.”

Paul is expressing the thought that the church is comprised of individuals that share

life together to comprise the body of Christ. The experiences of life, both the good

and the bad, the difficult and easy, the challenging and the rewarding, are shared

with each other so we can strengthen each other as we live Christ-honoring lives.

My friend, as you live life today, no matter your circumstances, know that you do

not have to go through today alone. Almighty God, who loves you very much, and

your fellow Christ-followers, are walking with you. You are not alone. May you

find strength and encouragement in this all-important biblical truth.

Prayer: O Lord, our Lord, how majestic is your name in all the earth. I praise

You, Lord of heaven and earth, for your promise to never leave me. I praise You

for calling people, and myself, to be in relationship to you and bring us together in

the body of Christ to “walk together” in life. Enable me, Lord, to feel your

presence, and to know there are Christ-followers walking with me as well. I am not

alone. In Jesus’ name I pray. Amen.
