The Greatness of God (Part 1)
By: Pastor Jim Schoon
Key Passage- Psalm 19:1-2
The heavens declare the glory of God; the skies
proclaim the work of his hands. Day after day they pour forth
speech; night after night they display knowledge.”
My wife and I have an energetic 5-year old black lab, Amica, who loves to go for
her walks twice a day. Many times she is ready before we are! We take her early in
the morning, as well as in the evening. It is a time for her to get some much-
needed exercise, see the sights in the neighborhood, and visit with the friends she
has met over the years. However, these walks are more than exercise for her
“mom and dad.” They are a time for us to enjoy the majesty and beauty of God’s
We have seen the morning sun rise above Mission Peak as it lights up the sky with
its varied colors of red, orange, and yellow. The clouds light up with a shade of
pink as they make their way across the sky on their journey for the day. The cool
air of the morning gives a refreshing beginning to the new day…a day which will
end with a beautiful sunset, the rising of the moon, and stars dotting the night sky.
Yes, our walks remind us of the greatness of God.
The greatness of God is seen in His creative power. The sun, moon, and stars that
we see speak of the omnipotence of God…and there is so much more that we
cannot see. As the centuries unfold, humankind is discovering there is “more
beyond.” And the Bible reminds us that it was God who created.
The greatness of God is seen in the order in creation. Because of this order, this
dependability, we can count on the sun breaking through the darkness of the night,
as well as the stars making their appearance as night falls. Yes, “the heavens
declare the glory of God.” And for that we are grateful.
And…this all-powerful God is the One who sent His Son to die for our sins so we
could have a relationship with Him. This all-powerful God is the One who loves
us very much and wants to share today with you.
Be reminded of this as you live today. As you look at the creation that is
“proclaiming the work of his hands,” know that God the Creator walks with you as
a Christ-follower…and…be blessed.
Prayer: Almighty and Everlasting God, I praise you for your creation and the
order in that creation. You have made a beautiful world that reminds me of your
glory, both day and night. I thank you for your son, Jesus Christ, and your power
in raising him from the dead so that I might know you in a personal way. I pray
that I will be mindful of you as life unfolds today. In Jesus’ name I pray. Amen.
