The Greatness of  God (Part 2)

Key Passage- Lamentations 3:22-23

“Because of the Lord’s great love, we are not consumed, 

for his compassions never fail. They are new every morning; 

great is your faithfulness.”


In my previous devotional I talked about walking our dog in the morning, and how

the beauty of the morning reflected the greatness of God in creation. In today’s

devotional I want to emphasize the greatness of God in his faithfulness to us,

especially in the freshness of the morning.


The greatness of God is seen in his consistency, his steadfastness, as he deals with

his people. God has made promises that he will love his people and provide for

them as they walk together in life. This love is a “beyond measure” love that is the

prerogative of God. He has promised to love us…chosen to love us…and because

part of his nature includes integrity…he will be consistent in loving us. In other

words, we can count on his faithfulness in our relationship with him.


Part of his faithfulness is reflected in the dawning of a new day. As darkness gives

way to dawn, and the sun breaks over Mission Peak, we are reminded that a new

day brings a new beginning. That thought is as refreshing as the coolness in the air

and the droplets of water on the grass.


As the new day dawns, God’s compassions…his mercies…are also new…and

adequate… for the day ahead. God will provide what we need for the next 24

hours. “They are new every morning…”


Because of the complexities of life, it is easy to feel that we are being consumed as

the days grow into weeks…and beyond. However, the author of our passage for

today reminds us that “we are not consumed” because of the daily provisions of

life that are given to us out of the great faithfulness of God. A familiar song we

sing speaks of this truth as it says, “Morning by morning new mercies I see. All I

have needed your hand has provided. Great is your faithfulness, Lord, unto me.”

No matter what our situation is, the faithfulness of God is promised to us. As we

live one day at a time, the mercies of God are new every morning. May you sense

the refreshment of this truth, and face today with the promise of God’s faithfulness

to you.


Prayer: Eternal and Everlasting God, as I praise you for your greatness in creation,

so I praise you for the greatness of your love. You are a God who keeps your

promises to his people, and I am eternally grateful for you. No matter what I face

today, I will face it with the awareness that you are faithful and providing for my

needs. I love you, Lord. In Jesus’ name I pray. Amen.
