The Blessing of a New Beginning

By: Pastor Jim Schoon

Key Passage: 1 John 1:9

“If we confess our sins, he is faithful and just

and will forgive us our sins and cleanse us from all unrighteousness.”

I came across a saying the other day that has significance for personal relationships

as well as our view of life. It goes like this: “Nobody can go back and start a new

beginning. But anyone can start today and make a new ending.”

We have all made mistakes that we wish we could take back: a misspoken word, a

fit of anger, or an action that was harmful to others or ourselves. The Bible calls

that sin, meaning “we miss the mark” that God has set for us. It is God’s will that

we live in harmony with Himself and others. However, because of our fallen

nature, we sometimes disrupt that harmony with ill-advised words, thoughts, and

behavior. Because of our sin, relationships are disrupted, and brokenness occurs.

And we cannot “go back and start a new beginning.” The past is history and

cannot be re-done, revised, or rewritten. However, life must continue, and it

remains God’s will for us to live in harmony. He has made a way to “start today

and make a new ending.”

He gives us the promise in I John 1:9 that we are to confess our sins…we are to

admit when we have wronged another. We are to own our mistakes. When we do

“fess up,” we find that God is faithful and just to forgive us our sins and cleanse us

from all unrighteousness. Because of God’s action, we can start fresh. We can

begin a new day with a freedom from guilt…and a freedom to live as God wants us

to live. We can begin to make a “new ending.”

Confessing our sins and making a new start impacts us physically, mentally,

spiritually, and emotionally. Confession frees us from having to carry a

destructive past and energizes us to participate in a productive future. This is made

possible because Jesus Christ died for our sins, and He has paid the price.

I would invite you to make the most of God’s invitation to have a new start. Make

a confession, lift your sins to God, and sense Him breathing in to you new life for a

new beginning…so you can have a new ending!

Prayer: Almighty God, I confess to you that I have failed to follow your ways,

have made mistakes, and have sinned against you and others. I want to be free

from my guilt to live a new life that honors you. I confess my sins to you and look

forward to more opportunity to live for and with you. In Jesus’ name I pray.

Amen.
