Living With Purpose
By: Pastor Jim Schoon
KEY PASSAGE: JOHN 15:5
“I am the Vine and you are the branches. When you are joined with me
and I with you, the relation intimate and organic, the harvest is sure to be abundant.
Separate, you can’t produce a thing.”
Two questions that we ask as men and women are:
1) Does my life have meaning?
2) Am I contributing to the lives of others?
In our passage for today, Jesus is talking to his disciples about finding purpose and
being productive in life. Jesus is in the middle of his final conversation with his
disciples. This is a significant conversation for Jesus because following this
discourse, He will be arrested and will go to the cross. He wants to be certain his
disciples hear his heart.
He tells them they can have a meaningful life only as they stay connected with
him. As the vine is the source of life for the branches, so He is the source of life for
them. Staying connected to Jesus will give them a meaningful life.
Jesus also tells his disciples that as they stay connected to him, the harvest will be
abundant. As the branches and vine produce a harvest, his disciples will also be
productive in their lives. They will contribute to the lives of others in many ways,
influencing them for the Kingdom of God.
In our 21st century, we also want our lives to have meaning, and we want to
contribute to the lives of others. The secret of those hopes and dreams is to stay
connected to Jesus. Believe in him, walk with him, and allow his life to flow into
ours. As you are joined to Jesus in your daily living, you will contribute to the
lives of others and make a significant difference. Your life will reflect the
character of Jesus, and the fruit of the Spirit (love, joy, peace, patience, kindness,
goodness, faithfulness, gentleness, and self-control) will flow from Jesus, through
you, into the lives of those you meet on the journey of life. And yes, you will
make a difference!
As you live today, be intentional about being connected to Jesus, and know that
people you meet will be influenced as you live with Him.
PRAYER: Our Father in heaven, thank you for sending Your Son, Jesus Christ,
into our world and my life. Thank you for allowing me to be connected to Him in
an intimate and organic way. It is a privilege to share life with Him, and it is my
desire to please You as You use me to make a difference in Your Kingdom. In
Jesus name I pray. Amen.
