Connecting the Dots
By Pastor Jim Schoon
Key Passage: Luke 24:30-32
Thought for the day: In the middle of chaos and confusion, God makes sense out of life by connecting the dots.
One of the great stories of the Bible comes after the resurrection when Jesus joins two men as they walked on the road to Emmaus. These two Christ-followers were living in a moment of chaos and confusion. They had hoped Jesus was the Messiah, but, instead, he had died on the cross. And his body was now missing. They had many questions, and very few answers. As Luke tells us, “their faces were downcast.” How were they to make sense of life?
As they made their way along the road to Emmaus, Jesus joined them, and they dialogued together. When they finally reached their home, they invited Jesus to come and stay with them. As they were sharing a meal with him, Luke tells us, “When he was at the table with them, he took bread, gave thanks, broke it, and began to give it to them. Then their eyes were opened, and they recognized him, and he disappeared from their sight. They asked each other, ‘Were not our hearts burning within us while he talked with us on the road and opened the Scriptures to us?’”
During their chaos and confusion, Jesus connected the dots for them through the use of prophecy, his own presence, and the sensation in their hearts. They understood Jesus had risen, and life took on greater meaning!
As we live in this moment of chaos and confusion, we, too, may have many questions and few answers. We, too. may have hopes and dreams that are being challenged. The dots of life may no longer connect.
The Christ-followers in the Lukan narrative discovered that spending time with Jesus connected the dots of their discouragement and brought new life to them. We can have that same experience today as we spend time with Jesus and allow him to speak to us. Through an “aha” moment, an intuition, a sense of peace, a revelation, or a clear voice from the Lord, we, too, can have that experience of a “burning heart” as we allow our Lord and Savior to connect the dots in our lives. As that happens, we will find meaning in what is happening, and know in our hearts that God is leading us, and we are in His heart each step we take.
Take a moment to imagine yourself walking with Jesus and let him love you.
Prayer: Almighty and Everlasting God, we are grateful that You have given us Your Son, Jesus Christ, who comes into our lives and makes a difference. As we live in a time of chaos and confusion, it is our prayer that you will open our eyes, our ears, and our hearts to know Your purpose for us. We ask that you connect the dots for us as you touch our lives, deepen our faith, and enable us to trust You moment by moment as we walk together. In Jesus’ name we pray. Amen.
