Opportunity to Honor God
By: Pastor Jim Schoon
KEY PASSAGE: Colossians 3:17
“And whatever you do, whether in word or deed, do it all in the
name of the Lord Jesus, giving thanks to God the Father through him.”
I came across a phrase the other day that prompted me to think about what we can
do as we continue to deal with our “interrupting” crisis. The author said, “This
pandemic can be an opportunity for excellence.” As I reflected on that thought,
my mind went to Paul’s letter to the Colossians when he wrote, “And whatever you
do, whether in word or deed, do it all in the name of the Lord Jesus, giving thanks
to God the Father through him.” (Colossians 3:17).
This passage is not only appropriate in “normal” times but can have special
application in times of crisis. Even though we are limited in where we can go and
what we can do, we do have today to do which is filled with opportunities. While
we are limited, we are not bereft of things to do and people to interact with. This is
a “new normal” but it is also one in which we can make a difference by doing
things we have put off…or avoided. We can enhance relationships that perhaps
have slipped away or been put on hold because of our busyness. It is truly an
opportunity for excellence!
Since we believe that God is in control of our lives, and He works with us and for
us in all situations, we can partner with Him in what we do and say, and honor Him
in the process by offering our best efforts. As we do this, our attitude improves
considerably because we know we are being obedient to our Lord. Also, what we
do has purpose because we are doing it “in the name of the Lord.” Remembering
why we do things brings a fresh spirit to our activities. And as we give thanks to
God, the Father, we remember His goodness in our lives.
As you go about your life today, remember the Lord is with you, and the two of
you are partnering in life to do things well. Make the best of it…for you…and for
Prayer: Our Father in heaven, thank you for being with us in all situations and
thank you for the relationship we have. As I go about my daily living, may I see
the opportunity for excellence you have given me, and may I respond in the name
of my Lord, Jesus. Thank you for your blessings in my life. In Jesus’ name I pray.
