God Will Make a Way
By: Pastor Jim Schoon
KEY PASSAGE: ISAIAH 43:18-19
“The Lord said, ‘Forget the former things; do not dwell on the past. See, I am
doing a new thing! Now it springs up; do you not perceive it? I am making a way
in the desert and streams in the wasteland.’”
Our Centerville Presbyterian Church choir has sung a song entitled, “God Will
Make A Way.” The opening lines are as follows, “God will make a way where
there seems to be no way. He works in ways we cannot see; He will make a way
for me. He will be my guide, hold me closely to His side. With love and strength
for each new day, He will make a way.”
The words of this song reflect the theme of Isaiah 43:18-19, where Isaiah writes, “I
(God) am making a way in the desert and streams in the wasteland.”
Israel was in a situation where they needed assurance that God was with them and
was active in their lives. Life had changed for them, and more change was
coming. Through the prophet Isaiah God connects with them and tells them to
forget the past…and to look ahead. The message was one for them to celebrate:
He would make a way for them when they could not see their way clear. However,
in looking ahead, they were not to put expectations on God…He would make a
way for them in His timing and His way. He would do “a new thing!”
As God was interacted with the people of Israel, so He is with us today as we move
through our own “desert.” He is providing for us, and during uncertainty we can
be sure that God is doing a new thing. What will “new” look like? We do not
know. What we do know is God is involved in our lives in such a way that
something new is what is needed for us as a world, a country, and a community.
We cannot put our expectations on God, but we are called to trust He is “making a
way where there seems to be no way.” Holding this thought in our minds and
hearts enables us to face each day with confidence and a “holy expectation” that
God is working. It settles our nerves and gives a freshness to each day.
My friend, as you partner with God today, He holds you by His side. What a
wonderful thought! Be blessed in this moment.
Prayer: Lord God Almighty, your working in the past gives me confidence for
today. Thank you for making a way for Your people and reminding me that You
will make a way for me. May I be encouraged that You hold me by Your side as I
move through this day…making a way for me when I am not sure about the future.
In Jesus’ name I pray. Amen.
