Poor in Spirit

Key Passage: Matthew 5:3
3 “Blessed are the poor in spirit, for theirs is the kingdom of heaven.
What does it mean to be poor in spirit? And why is it that the poor in spirit are the ones will
inherit the kingdom of heaven? To be poor in spirit is to be spiritually bankrupt; it’s to
acknowledge that without God we are completely and utterly depraved. Without God we have no
hope, we have no future, we have no possible reality of receiving the good life where we would
thrive and finally have peace and prosperity. To be poor in spirit is to be utterly nothing without
God. But it is the poor in spirit who recognizes their state of emptiness, their bankruptcy. They
realize that they need a savior – a matter of fact they need a King who can make things right. The
poor in spirit are those who live in humility and humbleness because they know that all that they
have received from Christ is a gift from Him, they have done nothing to deserve it.
The poor in spirit who have received all the spiritual blessings in Christ by being united to Him
have in one sense already inherited the Kingdom of God, but also will one day inherit it (already-
but-not-yet). The humble and those who have nothing are the ones who have gained everything
by being brought into the fold in Christ.
Ultimately, to be poor in spirit is to be like Christ who lived with complete and perfect humility
and humbleness throughout His life. We see His ultimate humiliation and humbleness on the
cross. Therefore, the poor in spirit are those walk in the humble and humiliating footsteps of
Christ. Let us live as those who have gained nothing by our own merits, but who have gained
everything in Christ – for what is true of Him is now true of you.
Blessed are the poor in spirit, for theirs is the kingdom of heaven.
