The Watchful Care of God

By: Pastor Jim Schoon

KEY PASSAGE: Matthew 10:29-31 “Are not 2 sparrows sold for a penny?  Yet not one of them will fall to the ground apart from the will of your Father.  And even the very hairs of your head are all numbered.  So, don’t be afraid:  you are worth more than many sparrows.”

This passage grabs our attention today and gives us much comfort as we move into Week 7 of our shelter-in-place.  There are times when we may wonder if we are important…if we count…if we make a difference to someone.  There are times when we may wonder who, if anyone, is in charge of life.  These words of Jesus from the book of Matthew speak to those issues that roll around in our minds and hearts.

Jesus is speaking to his disciples before he sends them out to spread the good news,  and he is encouraging them with words of instruction and comfort.  He is reminding them not to be afraid of what and who they encounter, but to stand up and face the situation with courage.  Why can they do that?  Jesus gives two reasons.

The first reason is that God is in control of life…and their lives. His sovereignty stretches over all that was and is: creation, life, and situations.  Jesus reminds his disciples that not even a sparrow will fall to the ground apart from the will of the Father.  God is in control of life.  He promotes the incomprehensible thought that even the hairs of their heads were numbered!  God is in control of life because He created life and rules over it.

The second reason Jesus gives so they can face life with courage is that they have value.  God knows them (even the hairs on their heads are counted), watches over them, and communicates they are important.  The reasoning is this:  If God watches over the sparrows (who had little value in those days), and counts the hairs on the heads of the disciples, He will be with them because they are of greater value.

We have that same assurance today. The reality of life is that we do face dilemmas, some of them our doing and some of them “just happen” to us.  We do stumble, make mistakes, and find ourselves in unlikely predicaments.  During those moments, Jesus’ words assure us that God is in control of our lives and watching over us.   And…we have value as individuals because God has given us that value.

God’s providence is seen not only in the immensity of the created world, but is also seen in the daily activities of you and me.  This is a wonderful thought as it points to events in our lives as having meaning, and our having value as people created in the image of God.  My friend, be blessed today.  God exercises His providential care in your life, and… you are important!

Prayer:  Almighty and Everlasting God, I praise You that You are a God who created the world…and gave me life…and You exercise providential care over me. I praise You that You have given me value and see me as having significance.  As I move through this period of history, may I be strengthened in knowing You are present with me, and may I live as someone who can make a difference because of You. In Jesus’ name I pray.  Amen.
